Rotary Clubs Working Together to Bring Food, Hope, and Peace
Rotary Clubs Pack Weekend Meals for Nearly 200 Students at Green Acres Elementary

Atlanta Brasil and Smyrna clubs support Backpack Buddies on September 8, 2026

On September 8, 2026, the Rotary Club of Smyrna led a Backpack Buddies service project at Green Acres Elementary School to provide weekend meals for students experiencing food insecurity. Members of the Rotary Club of Vinings Cumberland and the Rotary Club Atlanta Brasil joined the Rotary Club of Smyrna to help pack bags for nearly 200 students.

Volunteers assembled bags filled with non-perishable foods, including proteins, vegetables, breakfast items, snacks, and fruit, so students have food available when they are away from school. The packing work supports the ongoing efforts of the Backpack Buddies of Metro Atlanta program to reduce weekend hunger for children in the community.

For Atlanta Brasil members, the project was about much more than packing food — it was about helping create peace at home. When a child knows there will be something to eat over the weekend, there can be less worry, less uncertainty, and greater comfort for the entire family. A bag of food may be a simple act, but it can bring a sense of security, dignity, and peace to a household facing difficult circumstances.

Peace can begin in a child’s home, around the family table, when basic needs are met and families feel supported by their community. Through this project, volunteers were reminded that addressing hunger is also a way of promoting peace: nourished children are better able to learn, grow, participate in school, and experience the stability every child deserves.

We are grateful to the Rotary Club of Smyrna for leading this meaningful project and to the Rotary Club of Vinings Cumberland and Rotary Club Atlanta Brasil for joining together in service. This is Rotary in action: clubs working together to fight hunger, strengthen families, and build peace—one meal, one child, and one home at a time.

Service Above Self. Creating Hope. Building Peace.
